Due to the sudden illness of the captain and co-pilot, Conan and Isao Shinjō took control of the aircraft. Just before landing, the plane was struck by lightning and battered by strong winds, causing it to lose control and collide with the control tower. One of the engines fell off, and the airport became unusable due to the resulting fire.
